Breastfeeding discreetly

Recently there has been new media focus again on breastfeeding in public. class 95 dejays during the morning express show discussed about it and how it would not offend the public if it was done DISCREETLY!

Here is a short video to show what is a proper latch and when the baby is latched on properly, they get lots of milk from their mommy and the areola and nipples are all covered.

This video shows almost the whole boob. However, with a properly tailored nursing top, none of that would be showing! you'd be covered from neck to where your baby's partial face is ( if the nursing top is a front crop top or an empire line nursing top )

Somewhat like the picture here. The nursing top covers essentially every possible body parts that would be potentially exposed. This 18 month old baby is suckling at the breast!

BabyCare Festival opened with a bang!

The BabyCare Festival opened with a bang! First 1000 customers get free goodie bags from the organizer, MediaCorp. And to my pleasant surprise, there were seats in the hall for shoppers! This really made customers’ shopping experience more pleasant! Today, the fair opens at 11am and ends at 9pm.

However, be reminded that on Sunday, the last day of the fair, we stop our sales at 630pm although the fair ends at 8pm. Please come early to shop with us. We will pack up early!

Also, our shop renovation is underway and we will only resume retail hours on 23^rd March, Tuesday as renovation has been delayed and we need an extra day to complete the works to serve you better.

What to do to usher in 2010?

New Year parties are for the young and energetic party goers. They are hardly suitable for families with young children. So what can you do to usher in the New Year meaningfully without being bored? I can offer up some suggestions for you and your children!

Get up early on new year's day and have a picnic at great playgrounds to talk about resolutions, goals and objectives the fun way! Children at school going age can make a goal chart as a follow up.
If you are the out-going type, have the family conquer something together like scaling up Mt Faber or Bukit Timah Hill together to welcome 2010! It can also be something new that you have not done for a long time together as a family!
You can stay home and do a few scrapbook pages of past year photos and write about what you are thankful for and what you look forward to in 2010. Instead of keeping them in the album, you can display this framed up!
You can clean up the house and tidy the wardrobe or books to remind yourself that you are starting afresh and anew - this will also help prepare kids for school when the term begins and prepare them mentally for what is to come in 2010.
You can do a diary of major events that happened in 2009 by looking through old newspapers and count your blessings.
For movie lovers, you can rent a few great movies screened in 2009 and watch them as a family and enjoy laughing and crying together, depending on the movies you're getting...
For food lovers, you can always cook up a storm at home and invite a few close friends to chat about the year past and share what is to come for yourself.
You can head out to the beach to build a sandcastle together as a family. It is not as easy as it seems... it takes teamwork and that is a good start to strengthen family bonds.
You can do shopping as a family and get each one a gift ( less than $5 ) and then tell that person in the family why you bought that gift for him or her and what you hope for that person in 2010.
Of course you can sleep in and wake for "brunch" by the poolside... and do nothing but laze your new year away... if that's how you want to relax.

I hope everyone will start 2010 afresh with many areas of life to improve and exciting prospects to look forward to. News will always be bleak with catastrophes here and economic downturns there and calamities plaguing more... so we need to brighten up and pass on the candle to someone else to brighten their day!

Papaya Soup to boost milk supply?

From the requests of many stressed out mommies with twins or simply just because you experienced a dip in your milk supply when you returned to work, here is a simple recipe sharing from me. I drink this 3-4 times a week and it boosted my milk supply tremendously.

As each person's body reacts differently, some may have results while others still would not get the desired effect of increased milk supply. Do know that rest and relaxation from a stressful environment is pertinent too in affecting milk supply.

Here's the simple recipe:

Get the raw green papayas from your friendly neighbourhood fruit vendor. A medium size one cooks up a pot enough for 4 servings.
Peel and cut these raw papayas into bite size and boil them in a pot with about 5 bowls of water.
Add in about 250g of pork ribs or 3 piece of chicken thighs. ( you may remove excess fat or skin if desired )
Remember to add in half cup of red dates and wolfberry seeds. ( the latter, you may add in half an hour before serving. )
Cut up one piece of white fungus with a pair of scissors.
You may add in a honey date ( optional )

All the ingredients above can be added into the pot of boiling water all at once.

: Papaya Soup with Chicken ( without White fungus )

Bring the boiling soup to simmer/ brew over low fire for about 3-4 hours.

The soup is ready to serve after that. The papaya can be eaten or left alone as the essence is already in the soup after so many hours of brewing.

An overnight effect can be seen or for some mommies, a week later.

Hope you have fun trying this out. Even when not lactating now, I still drink this soup occasionally coz it's a yummy soup to consume!

Fenugreek Seeds - a breast milk supply booster?

A substance that increases milk supply is called a galactagogue. One of the most commonly used herbal galactagogues is fenugreek, Do remember that any galactagogue will be most effective in increasing milk supply when combined with an increased nursing frequency.

For whatever reasons whether psychological or circumstantial, if your breast milk supply dips, the best stimulant is still to nurse your baby directly and let the supply and demand rule work for you and your baby. Relax and don't allow stress to be a factor.

Mothers generally notice an increase in production 24-72 hours after starting on the herb, but it can take two weeks for others to see a change.

Dosages of less than 6 capsules/day (approx 3500 mg/day) produce no effect in many women. One way to determine if you're taking the correct dosage is to slowly increase the amount of fenugreek until your sweat and urine begin to smell like maple syrup. If you're having problems with any side effects, discontinue use and consider other alternatives such as taking in raw green papaya soup stewed with pork ribs and red dates.

Fenugreek can be used either short-term to boost milk supply or long-term to augment supply and/or pumping yields. There are no studies indicating problems with long-term usage. Per Kathleen Huggins "Most mothers have found that the herb can be discontinued once milk production is stimulated to an appropriate level. Adequate production is usually maintained as long as sufficient breast stimulation and emptying continues" [Huggins].

Possible side effects and cautions

Sweat and urine smells like maple syrup; milk and/or breastfed baby may smell like maple syrup.
Occasionally causes loose stools, which go away when fenugreek is discontinued.
Use of more than 100 grams of fenugreek seeds daily can cause intestinal distress and nausea (recommended dose is less than 8 grams per day).
Repeated external applications can result in undesirable skin reactions [Wichtl 1994].
Ingestion of fenugreek seeds or tea in infants or late-term pregnant women can lead to false diagnosis of maple syrup urine disease in the infant due to presence of sotolone in the urine. See [Korman 2001] and other studies on fenugreek and maple syrup urine smell.

Use with caution or avoid if you have a history of:

Peanut or chickpea allergy: Fenugreek is in the same family with peanuts and chickpeas, and may cause an allergic reaction in moms who are allergic to these things. Two cases of fenugreek allergy have been reported in the literature. [Patil 1997, Ohnuma 1998, Lawrence 1999]
Diabetes or hypoglycemia: Fenugreek reduces blood glucose levels, and in the few studies using it as a hypoglycemic, also reduces blood cholesterol. Dosages higher than the recommended one (given above) may result in hypoglycemia in some mothers [Heller]. If you're diabetic (IDDM), use fenugreek only if you have good control of your blood glucose levels. While taking this, closely monitor your fasting levels and post-prandial (after meals) levels. Mothers with hypoglycemia should also use fenugreek with caution.
Asthma: Fenugreek is often cited as a natural remedy for asthma. However, inhalation of the powder can cause asthma and allergic symptoms. Some mothers have reported that it worsened their asthma symptoms. [Dugue 1993, Huggins, Lawrence 1999].
Abnormal menstrual cycles: Fenugreek is considered to be an emmenagogue (promotes menstrual flow). Per [White], it may cause breakthrough menstrual bleeding; this source recommends using fenugreek with caution if you have a history of abnormal menstrual cycles.
Migraines: Fenugreek is often cited as a natural remedy for migraines. However, [White] indicates that it may trigger a migraine and/or contribute to the duration and severity of a migraine.
Blood pressure problems or heart disease: Fenugreek is commonly reported to lower blood pressure and LDL blood cholesterol levels. [White] indicates, however, that it may cause or contribute to hypertension (high blood pressure) - this source recommends avoiding this herb if you have a history of hypertension, or if there is a strong family history of hypertension or heart disease.

Baby's starting to munch

When your baby's gums get tougher and they start cutting a tooth or two or when they start to drool or show interest in what you put in your mouth... he is ready to try feeding on pureed food besides his daily intake of milk ( be it breastmilk or formula )

I am no gourmet cook but when I first became mom, I read up, I listened to my dad, who is a fantastic cook... and eventually learnt to prepare simple porridge and meals palatable for a baby and my toddler.

For a baby who is starting to taste food for the first time, it is a good guide to stick with foods that are not highly allergenic - such as porridge or brown rice porridge, pureed spinach, broccoli and sweet potatoes. Do avoid berries and pears as they are harsher on the tiny and still developing intestines.

I started with pureed porridge which I boiled with dried scallops to add taste to the porridge. ( serve only the porridge ) My 6 month old liked it but soon got bored with it and refused to open his mouth to it. So I tried giving him pureed apples. ( cored and peeled and boiled or steamed to make it soft without losing the nutrients ) They were welcoming because it was sweet but when I tried to alternate pureed porridge and pureed apples after that, he would not open his mouth to the porridge! How smart he is!

I learnt never to under estimate babies after that. It's a good guide to try out new foods and monitor for allergies such as red spots near the mouth area or face or the back of the body. These signs to look for may appear gradually after 2-3 days of ingestion. Another good way to check for digestion is the change in the baby's stool - colour and smell. A good gauge for a mom is the rule of "input =output". When your baby starts to feed on pureed food, check the diaper changes - did it increase? did it decrease? All these are good cues for you as you learn to feed your baby.

I personally found the baby freezer cubes ( which are BPA free ) really good in helping me prep food properly without having to waste food or having to eat the excess myself when I prepare his purees. It also saves me time. I just need to get one or two sweet potatoes and steam them, cut and process them before adding some breast milk to make the consistency better and smoother, and before I serve and store the rest into these neat cubes with lids. They last a week or more and there is no loss of nutrients coz the lids prevent freezer burn.

Each time I want to feed him, I just take a cube out from the freezer in the morning and place it in the fridge which would thaw it a little. In the afternoon, just take the same cube from the fridge and pop it into the microwave to thaw and warm the food. However, if you are uncomfortable with microwaving this BPA free plastic cube, then pop it into a porcelain bowl, cover with a wrap and prep it the same way.

My 6 month old only has 2 such feeds a day while being breast fed on demand. Some babies can take more... depending on their diaper changes, appetite and growth spurt periods.

What you should know about BisPhenol A or BPA?

BisPhenol A or BPA as it is commonly known, is an ingredient used to make plastics called Polycarbonates. Polycarbonate is generally used in consumer products because it does not break or shatter easily, can be cleaned in very hot water, sterilizes easily, does not absorb odour and is an extremely safe alternative to glass. Polycarbonate plastic is commonly found in household products such as water bottles, food storage containers and a variety of children's toys.

Suspected of being hazardous to humans since the 1930s, as low doses of bisphenol A can mimic the body's own hormones, possibly causing negative health effects, there is concern that long term low dose exposure to bisphenol A may induce chronic toxicity in humans. ( aka cancer ) Also, concerns about the use of bisphenol A in consumer products was regularly reported in the news media in 2008 when several governments issued reports questioning its safety. This led to some retailers removing such products made from it off their shelves.

What is scary to mothers especially is that infants fed with liquid formula are among the most exposed, and those fed formula from polycarbonate bottles can consume up to 13 micrograms of bisphenol A per kg of body weight per day! So mothers do check that your feeding bottles are BPA free for the long term sake of your little baby.

Also this can translate to our daily food prep. methods and food choices....Consumer groups recommend that people wishing to lower their exposure to bisphenol A to avoid canned food and polycarbonate plastic containers unless the packaging indicates the plastic is bisphenol A-free. The National Toxicology Panel recommends avoiding microwaving food in plastic containers, putting plastics in the dishwasher, or using harsh detergents, to avoid leaching.

So the next time you do your shopping, not only read food labels but also labels of plastic bottles to make sure they are BPA Free. What is heartening to know is that retailers who are aware of this and are responsible, are taking steps to inform customers and consumers about this little known fact that could affect your baby's health a long way!

Do read about the different classifications of plastics to know how much leaching occurs when very hot water is applied to it or when you sterilize the bottles for hygiene sake. You may not know you are actually causing leaching to these different grades of plastics and doing more harm to your little loved ones.

Yuan Xiao Jie - 15th day of Lunar Year

The 15th day after the Lunar New year is Lantern Festival in Chinese culture। It falls on the first full moon of the lunar calendar.

Lantern Festival is known in Mandarin Chinese as yuán xiāo jié 元宵節 (trad) 元宵节 (simp). Many cities have fabulous lantern displays, and children carry ornate lanterns through the streets.

Origins of Lantern Festival
There are several stories about the origin of Lantern Festival। One of them tells about Yuan Xiao, a maiden living in the emperor’s palace। Yuan Xiao had a luxurious life, but she missed her family and wanted to see them during the New Year celebrations. This was not allowed.

So Yuan Xiao devised a clever plan to sneak out of the palace. She told the emperor that the God of Fire had visited her and told her of his plans to burn down the entire city. She offered this advice to the emperor – “Make the city look like it is already on fire, then the God of Fire will go away.”
So the emperor ordered lanterns to be lit throughout the city and firecrackers to be set off। During the confusion, Yuan Xiao was able to get away unnoticed and had a joyous reunion with her family.

The Significance of Lantern Festival
The New Year represents a fresh start – the end of winter and the beginning of a new season। It is fitting, therefore, to end the New Year festivities with a celebration of light to mark the return of the light and warmth of the sun.

Traditionally, lanterns have been made of bamboo and paper। They can take on almost any shape, and range in size from tiny replicas to larger than life.

Animals are a common theme for lanterns, with the year’s current animal being a favorite। Lanterns can also be constructed in geometrical shapes, or made to represent the gods and goddesses.

Lantern Festival Activities
The traditional food of Lantern Festival is tāng yuán, also known as yuán xiāo। These are dumplings made from glutinous rice flour and filled with sweet or salty stuffing such as sesame paste, red bean paste or minced pork.

Some people release hot-air lanterns made of paper and fueled with kerosene। In the town of Pingshi in northern Taiwan, thousands of these sky lanterns are released to light up the night sky. The lanterns convey messages to the gods to bestow luck on the people below.

If you are brave, you can celebrate Lantern Festival in Yanshui, Taiwan, where they shoot fireworks directly into the crowd। Participants must be well padded with jackets, raincoats, and helmets, but despite this protection, many people get injured every year. This rather insane tradition is to appease Guangdong, the god of war and commerce. If you suffer a direct hit, you are sure of a prosperous year ahead.

Another Taiwan tradition is the Bombing of the God Handan. Handan is the god of wealth, and has a great fear of the cold. Anyone who wishes to be rich can help Handan keep warm by throwing firecrackers at him. The city of Taitung in Taiwan is a major center for this event.

Recipe - Tang Yuan Dessert

TangYuan is a dish of glutinous rice balls served in a sweet broth. In Chinese culture, it is traditionally served on Dong Zhi, the winter solstice. By eating tang yuan, you welcome in the winter and become one year older.
Tang yuan makes a delicious winter snack and is easy to prepare. Despite its association with mid-winter, it can be enjoyed at any time of year.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
· 1 cup glutinous rice flour
· 4 ounces water
· Brown sugar to taste
· Food coloring (optional)
· Fresh ginger (optional)

Preparation:
Pour the glutinous rice flour in a bowl and slowly add water until the mixture becomes the texture of dough. You may not need the entire 4 ounces of water to reach the proper consistency. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes. You can divide the dough in half and add food coloring to one half.
Pinch off pieces of the dough and roll it into small balls.
Drop the balls into boiling water and cook them until they float - about 5 to 10 minutes.
While the balls are cooking, prepare a sweet soup by boiling water and adding brown sugar. Fresh ginger can also be added to the soup.
Put the cooked balls into the soup and serve.
Tang Yuan can also be stuffed with a paste made from peanut butter, black sesame seeds or red beans.

I read with interest an article in TODAY papers stating that researchers have found that women with unborn baby boys who expose themselves to hormone- disrupting chemicals called Phthalates risk giving birth to sons with Hypospadias, a genital deformity which could lead to urinary, sexual and fertility problems in severe cases!

This calls for moms with boys to take precautionary measures during the formative months ie. first 3 to 6 months of your early pregnancy, that you do not expose your unborn baby to su

ch risks.

However, the article goes on to say that such problems can be surgically corrected and that it can be counteracted if one took Folic acid ( commonly known as Vit. M and Folacin ) which can be found in foods rich in Folate - sunflower seeds, leafy vegetables such as Spinach and liver or fortified cereals.

So mommies expecting boys, do be careful as you visit hair saloons and beauty parlours during this festive period to "doll up" - it may not be you using the hairspray, it may be the lady next to you... I wonder if baby girls are affected the same way? The article did not say....

Double Pumping and Single Pumping

Double Pumping improves milk supply and increases Prolactin level.

The production of breastmilk can be optimally stimulated through double pumping. Studies show that a mother can pump significantly more milk if she is double pumping instead of single pumping. For this reason, double pumping can be recommended especially to mothers with low milk production; ( Hypogalactia ) preterm babies; sick babies; twins and multiple births.

With Double pumping, the let down reflex can ocurr much more quickly.

During double pumping, both the nipples and the areolas are stimulated at the same time. Observations have shown that the let-down-reflex occurs earlier than with single pumping.

Double Pumping reduces the pumping time by half

With single pumping, the optimal duration is 20 minutes. Mothers need only 10 minutes for pumping with a double pump set. A reduced pumping time is a big advantage especially for mothers who are pumping for several weeks / months. eg. working mothers, mothers of preterm babies, sick babies or babies who cannot latch-on well.

No breast milk leakage

When single pumping, mothers may lose precious breast milk from the other breast. When double pumping however, mothers have the advantage of collecting all their milk without fear of contamination.

Double Pumping increases mothers' satisfaction

A study of mothers with premature babies who both double pumped and single pumped found that mothers who were double pumping were more satisfied.

I personally dislike using a single pump. I only use it when travelling on planes and overseas. If I can help it at all, I will try to double pump with all the points stated above. With time hardly on my side, I simply love double pumping.

Breastfeeding, Calcium Intake & Bone Mass

I read with interest in Today's papers regarding an article on how breastfeeding mother's intake for Calcium should increase to suuplement her own bone mass while lactating...

Are breastfeeding women then at risk for Osteoporosis? Well, a lactation consultant in private practice maintains that the it may not be so coz " most women replace bone loss rapidly once the baby stops breastfeeding....studies suggest that the situation may reverse and actually decrease the risk of Osteoporosis."

Hence breastfeeding mothers are not at risk... in fact other findings from other parts of the world seem to confer that breastfeeding mothers are less likely to fracture their bones when they breast feed too...

So here's another great reason to breastfeed!

Breastfeeding "cuts cancer risk" - Another great reason to breastfeed!

Check out how cancer risks can be reduced when one breaastfeeds babies for at least 6 months or more. Also recent findings list Breast cancer as the top killer, overtaking lung and colorectal cancers. To prevent it later in your mothering years, it is best to breastfeed beyond 6 months.

Tainted Baby Milk and Goodness of Breastfeeding

With so many recent discussions and horrific findings of tainted milk powder in the news, one can't help but to think why and who would do such a thing as to add Melamine ( aka poison now ) to infant formula so that it can appear to be more protein rich, but which now led to adverse developmental health of babies and children and even death of some???

One becomes enlightened that breastfeeding is really God-Given and free and most of all, SAFE. There are so many benefits that come with nursing your baby and if you are at the cross roads of deciding whether to nurse after birth, the choice is clearer now. Perhaps with more help at doing it right and how to nurse long term like I did, you can get help from lactation consultants. One of my fav. is Sister Kang as she had patiently taught me how to latch right when I was a first time mom. ( contact her at Mt Alvernia Parentcraft/ Lactation Dept. at 63476641.) If you are a DIY person, more reads at this fantastic web resource also helped me heaps!

However, not all mothers breastfeed. That is a recognised fact. Although I advocate breastfeeding because I personally had wonderful experiences of nursing both my girls( almost 3 years each ) till they self weaned, I also empathize with mothers who just cannot do so but have given thoughts to it or have at least tried. You are no lesser a great mom even if breastfeeding was not for you. I can only inform and encourage you or even provide aids to help you.

Eventually it is a lifestyle choice and your final decision for your family....

Nevertheless, give a second thought to giving your baby the safe and natural way of nutrition. :)

What goes into a Nursing Top? Some thoughts...

Nursing Tops help mothers to breastfeed discreetly. They may not be a necessity but they surely make a new mother's day out with their newborn a lot easier and a lot more fuss free.

I remembered when I first became mom, I had to change my wardrobe entirely as I was determined to breastfeed till my baby self weaned. I gave myself short term goals like "

let's try a week first, then a month and then it was 3 months and 6 months and ..." Finally I breastfed my first elder daughter till she self weaned at 2.5 years old. My second journey lasted 3 years. They are both healthy and happy.

I had post partum weight to loose after birth so many of my pre-pregnancy tops were too tight anyhow... My wardrobe was slowly replaced by nursing tops and more nursing tops.... simple plain ones to more fashionable ones that I can attend functions and occasions with, without looking too out of place. Hence ideas keep coming to me on how nursing openings should be done to facilitate nursing without being shy or being exposed...

Various combination of colours or fabric choices that will make a mother's busy day easier, affected decisions on how a nursing top should be made.

So a lot of thoughts and ideas go into the conception of a nursing top. From ideas to putting it down on paper, to making paper patterns and then sewing a prototype sample to test it out on mothers of various chest sizes and nursing positions... not forgetting lifestyles as well... be it a working mom or a stay-at-home-mom ( SAHM )

Styles that are appropriate for work should look sharp and smart so more

woven fabric can be explored here. If fabrics don't come with stretch, zipper openings are incorportated. They may be more troublesome to undo but they are definitely smarter chic pieces.

Styles that are simpler, easy to match with jeans and shorts for home wear, made for stay home moms or working mom's weekend wear, saw to exploration of more knit fabrics which gives stretch and these should withstand frequent washes without going out of shape.

Easier said than done, the search for suitable fabrics that go with appropriate styles will be the next challenge. It takes creativity here to make it work... if you had seen project runway episodes, you'd appreciate nursing tops being made for you. The process is tedious and when the final product is out, the pricing sometimes does not justify the work, time and effort put in.

In Heidi Klum's words... " in Fashion, one day you're in and the next, you're out" - but she is really referring to high fashion, courture fashion. With nursing tops, it's about evergreen pieces made to match easily and they are apparels with a function to fulfil as well... to help mothers breastfeed discreetly in public and with time, these nursing tops help you adopt a nursing lifestyle so prolonged nursing can be realised. Who reaps the benefits? Both you and your baby

However, designing and producing nursing wear is a passion for me so we are trying hard to make them more readily available, giving a choice and a range for nursing mothers to at least be smartly dressed and accomplish nursing their babies for at least 2 years or more.

It takes a little practice to know how to nurse well coz some babies can latch on and off and momentarily your tits may be exposed to people who happened to be watching. When done often and discreetly especially when latching on and off, which takes practice and confidence, NO ONE will really notice you nursing. Some people may well think you are soothing your baby to sleep.

The World Breastfeeding Week Event organised by BMSG was great. The organizing committee worked really hard for this event. Trust me... I saw Alderline, Lena, Angela and Rebecca buzzing about to make everyone feel welcomed, to make sure the events run smoothly. On top of it all, they are all volunteer working moms who have a passion for breastfeeding and would like to spread the message of its goodness to the public who may not know the benefits and goodness of nursing babies right from the start...kudos to them!

Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon ( MP for Holland - Bukit Timah GRC ) graced us with her presence too... and visited our booth!!! She simply loves our SlingZBaby Pouches...

Lastly and certainly, I would like to thank my ardent supporters who came by to my booth just to look for me. I am so touched! I am sure you were rewarded by the perks I gave you!!!
